I appreciate the patience from everyone who received quick, sporadic phone calls and emails from me in the last week. What a week it has been for folks in the Merrimack Valley, Nashoba Valley, Worcester County and Southern New Hampshire. It started raining ice in the middle of the night in Westford last Thursday. By morning the internet and cable were gone. The electricity and heat followed soon after. In the beginning it was kind of unexpected and fun, in a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off kind of way. But really it was cold and miserable. Now it’s five days later and I am finally up and running. That’s right, five looooong days.
What did I learn from this experience? Ice can do INCREDIBLE things to trees and wires and I am completely powerless over my addiction to the internet! I was able to keep up a bit thanks to the invention of the smartphone and the graciousness of the libraries and businesses (with power) in the area. The J.V Fletcher Library in Westford and the Reuben Hoar Library in Littleton stayed open extra hours and encouraged people to take advantage of their free WiFi and heat. I certainly did and while I was at it I got myself a new library card and a bunch of great books.
One final note, Westford was apparently one of the hardest hit places and the town offices received hundreds of phone calls and emails from residents seeking assistance and looking for information. Town Manager Jodi Ross sent out email updates several times a day and did an amazing job keeping us posted. All she has to worry about in the next few days are a couple of major snowstorms. Yikes.
