Have you heard about Patch? As hyper-local news junkies they’ve been on our radar awhile, and a few months we happened to be at one of our favorite mobile offices, (The Java Room, in Chelmsford!) and noticed someone with what appeared to be a big green Patch logo across the top of his opened computer. I went over and introduced myself and asked if he was affiliated with the Patch.com website. Sure enough, it was the editor of the Tewksbury Patch, Bill Gilman, who gave me an overview of what Patch is all about.
Started in February 2009 and backed by AOL, Patch.com considers itself a “start-up that’s radically reinventing community journalism”. They are investing loads of money in infrastructure and as of this writing they have built hundreds of sites in 17 states, with 33 live in Massachusetts and another 23 on the “coming soon” list. Wow. You can keep up with news and events, learn about local businesses and organizations and participate in discussions. Business owners can “claim” their business page and add their own content including pictures, menus and upcoming sales. Residents can “contribute” by adding items to the community calendar or the classifieds, you can review businesses and comment on just about anything on the site.
So what does this have to do with us?
Glad you asked…I’m thrilled to announce that I am the contributing writer for the Patch sites in the towns Barrett & Company serves, Arlington, Concord, Lexington, and Winchester. (Acton, Bedford and Westford will follow soon!) Every Friday the Patch sites feature my top open house picks for the upcoming weekend. In addition, each month we’ll share our local market snapshots to keep your finger on the pulse of the market. So be sure to come by and see what’s happening the next time you’re in the neighborhood!
